Chimney Rock/Lake Lure NC

Sometimes you just have to get away, right? Whether it is from a significant other, work, kids or just everything, calling a time out is just what the Doctor ordered. Last Fall, I took a time out with a friend who was also in need. We wanted someplace not too far away, so we could make the most of the few days, but far enough away to feel like an escape. We wanted some good options for meals, a comfortable place to lay our heads and some interesting things to do.

Lake Lure, North Carolina checked all the boxes. We took off and drove a beautiful drive of only about 2 hours

away from Hartwell piddling along.  I had made reservations at the Esmerelda Inn  which was perfect for us. The Inn sits right off the highway in a cove carved out of the mountain. In spite of the close proximity to the road, once ensconcesed in the Inn, the road fades away. The Inn has a wonderful restaurant, a separate area where families can gather, play games or just chat. There is also a large hot tub just steps away. We checked in, gathered up a couple of cookies for a late-night snack and headed to our room.

The next day, we headed downstairs for a wonderful breakfast on the outdoor deck. We took a walk and strolled through the gardens surrounding the Inn. Midmorning, we took off to explore Lake Lure. The Lake itself is where Dirty Dancing was filmed. The Lodge is still there and sits on the lake. You can rent boats, paddle boards as well as book a lake tour that may also include a dinner cruise. The town itself, Chimney Rock, is small, but full of restaurants, coffee shop, ice cream and several antique shops. Just a little further down the road, the lake appears. Right off the quiet road, there is a beach area that has a large play area with all kinds of fun looking activites. This part of the lake is a cove, so no worries about boat traffic so the kids can play and splash away. Just across from the lake, there are several restaurants that cater to the on the

beach crowd from hot dogs to seated options.

Our destination was the Flowering Bridge, see story here.

We spent the evening talking over our lives, playing scrabble and reconnecting. We woke the next morning, had a delicious quiet breakfast amidst the trees on the deck. We packed up and headed back to our lives, recharged and ready for whatever awaited us. Check out Lake Lure and Chimney Rock. Close to Asheville and perfect for a quick, quiet get-away.
