Kayaking, tubing and more on the Broad

[caption id="attachment_652" align="alignleft" width="150"] Kayaks ready for the river[/caption] On Easter weekend 2019, rain fell hard and heavy in Toccoa, Lavonia and other places. No one thought much about it, but for the Broad river kayak companies, it dealt a devastating blow. "The water moved in 20ft waves until 2 in the morning," said Katey Heath of Slow Water in Franklin Springs. Slow Water lost many of their kayaks and canoes, an all of their tubes. The Sandbar down in Bowman, lost 165 kayaks. Both have recovered many of the boats from helpful people down river, but the tubes were a total loss. So, Slow Water is beginning its season by moving the tons of sand dumped by the raging waters and blowing up all new tubes for their customers. Across our state there are eight state parks which offer a guest the opportunity to play golf while visiting. From Lake Blackshear and Georgia Veterans’ to Victoria Bryant and Highland Walk, these courses give the golfer an opportunity to test their skills across our state in a variety of ways as different as their locations. [caption id="attachment_595" align="alignleft" width="150"] Hole 5, par 5 at Arrowhead Pointe[/caption] If there is something that I have learned over the past forty years of enjoying the game, it is that there are no two golf courses that offer the same challenges or even the same looks as its neighbor. Sure, all courses usually feature a combination of par 3, par 4, and par 5 holes. What separates one course from another is how does an architect uses the design of each of the 18 holes is what separates one course from another. No where…

Each of these have won multiple tournaments and multiple major tournaments over the last 30 years. Quite a club to belong to, isn’t it? These individuals also share something else in common, they are all students of the David Leadbetter. Leadbetter’s help and instruction enables them and, others like them, to reach their maximum potential as a golfer. As a way to help all golfers, male, female, young or old, to learn to enjoy this game, Leadbetter established the first Leadbetter Academy in Orlando, Florida in 1983. This Academy, along with now forty other locations around the world, offers any person interested in learning the game the opportunity to learn this game…

Cateechee Golf Club

Our first review of our area golf courses is in Hartwell, at Cateechee Golf Club. Cateechee, named for a Cherokee Princess, opened in the late 1990’s and is the first upscale public course in Northeast Georgia. Awarded Audubon certification, Cateechee established the foundation for the other upscale area courses such as the Currahee Club in Toccoa and Arrowhead Pointe on Lake Russell near Elberton. Cateechee, designed by Athens Architect Mike Young sits on Highway 77, about 3 miles south of Hartwell. The 18-hole course, which can play up to 7000 yards in length, flows through woods and open areas on a 400-acre tract. The club and its facilities have greatly benefitted from an extensive update following the change in ownership from the Hartwell Telephone Company to its current owners, Charlie and Kelli Schell in 2017.  One of the first changes is the course greens, which were originally Greg Norman GN1…
